Myrick Claims Victory as Ithaca’s Youngest Mayor

Two years after graduation, 24 year-old Svante Myrick will become youngest-ever Ithaca mayor and also the youngest mayor in New York State when he takes office in January. Throughout the race, Myrick’s campaign team knocked on approximately 3,750 doors — hitting every door 2.5 times in the six months leading up to election.

Myrick did not have it easy growing up, a child of modest means. The Cornell University graduate owes his success to his family and friends in Earlville and the government programs that become targets of budget cuts. I wish him the best stepping up to the $61 million budget, a shrinking tax base, housing shortages and rising health care costs.

There were people who said ‘wait your turn,’ but it just felt like that’s not how these jobs should work — there shouldn’t be turns, you don’t wait in line. I felt like there was nothing that could stop me from trying, said Myrick.
